As tech corporations increasingly turn to nuclear power to meet the expanding energy demands of data centers, Google announced Monday that it will buy power from Kairos Power, a small modular reactor manufacturer. In addition to making a long-term commitment to speed up commercialization, Google claimed that buying from several SMRs sends a significant demand signal to the market.

Kairos Power and the Tech Industry: A Growing Partnership for Sustainable Energy Solutions

Established in 2016, Kairos Power is supported by the Department of Energy. The business started building the Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in July. Kairos Power employs molten fluoride salt as the reactor coolant instead of water, which is typically utilized in nuclear reactors.

The announcement made on Monday is just one more illustration of the expanding alliance between nuclear power and tech industries. Data centers require dependable electricity around the clock, and nuclear power is currently the sole source of baseload power that produces no emissions.
